NAS News

Synology logoSynology has announced two NASes: one wireless-connected; the other aimed at professional photo storage.

The DS213air is a two-bay NAS powered by a 1.6 GHz Marvell CPU with 256 MB of DDR3 RAM. LAN connection is via a single Gigabit Ethernet port and there are dual USB 3.0 ports for storage expansion and printer sharing.

2.5" and 3.5" SATA hard and SS drives up to 4 TB can be configured in Synology Hybrid RAID, individual volumes, JBOD, RAID 0 and RAID 1 volumes. RAID migration and online expansion are also supported.

The "air" references a built in 802.11bgn (2.4 GHz) wireless adapter that functions in access point, router and wireless bridge modes. Synology says the routing mode's NAT firewall supports 100 rules.

Synology specs RAID 1 writes from a Windows client at around 59 MB/s and reads around 108 MB/sec.

For considerably larger storage requirements, the DS2413+ can scale up to 24 drives for up to a total of 96 TB off storage when a DX1211 expansion cabinet is added. Powered by a dual-core 2.13 GHz Intel D2700 Atom processor, the DS2413+ comes with 2 GB of DDR3 RAM that can be expanded to 4 GB.

Dual Gigabit Ethernet ports supporting failover and aggregation provide network connection and two USB 3.0 and four USB 2.0 ports allow attachment of external drives and printers.

2.5" and 3.5" SATA hard and SS drives up to 4 TB can be configured in multiple volume types including Synology Hybrid RAID, individual volumes, JBOD, RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, RAID 5+Spare, RAID 6 and RAID 10. RAID migration and online expansion are also supported.

Synology says the DS2413+ can support around 200 MB/s RAID 5 writes and reads when using link aggregation.

Both NASes run Synology's DiskStation Manager OS that includes Synology's Cloud Station remote file sync feature, ADS integration, ACL support, iSCSI targets and iTunes and DLNA media servers.

Both the DS213air and DS2413+ are shipping now at MSRPs of $299.99 and $1,699.99, respectively.
