NAS News

Synology logoSynology announced an unavailable Marvell-based one-bay NAS last week.

We're a little late with this news, but it doesn't matter much anyway. A popup on the DS115's product page says "Due to the abnormal processing times in all the United States West Coast ports, the DS115 is unavailable in the Americas at this time".

When it does become available, you'll be getting a single-bay NAS very similar to Synology's cheapest NAS—the DS115j—announced last September. However, the new DS115 uses an 800 MHz Marvell Armada 375 vs. the 115j's 800 MHz Armada 370 and has 2X the RAM (512 MB vs. 256 MB).

The DS115's port complement includes one Gigabit Ethernet and one each USB 2.0, 3.0 and eSATA vs. just the two USB 2.0 ports on the DS115j.

Both run Synology's DSM 5.1 OS, with features including Cloud, Photo, Video and Audio Station built-in apps, access to all other installable apps, DLNA server, Apple Time Machine backup, file Sync to Google Drive, Dropbox, Baidu and other Synology DiskStations and streaming to Samsung Smart TV's, Google Chromecast and Roku and Apple media streamers.

As noted above, we can't say when you'll be able to buy this in the U.S. or what the price is. If you can't wait, get the DS115j for around $130 or the DS114 for around $200.
