QNAP announces TS-409 Pro Turbo NAS

QNAP today announced a 4-bay, hot-swappable NAS aimed at business users.

QNAP TS-409 Pro TurboThe TS-409 Pro Turbo is a Linux-based BYOD SATA NAS supporting RAID 0/ 1/ 5/ 6/ 5+spare disk redundancy, online RAID capacity expansion and level migration.

Apple intros Time Capsule Mac Networked auto-backup

Apple today introduced Time Capsule, a networked backup appliance that automatically backs up everything on one or more Macs running the latest Leopard OS.

Time Capsule comes in 500 GB and 1 TB versions and looks like an Apple Airport Extreme. It works in conjunction with Leopard's Time Machine feature to continuously and automatically back up all networked Macs via either Ethernet or wireless LAN connections.

It also is a fully-functioning dual-band (single radio) draft 802.11n wireless router with built-in USB print server. Other features include three gigabit LAN and one gigabit WAN Ethernet ports and support for WPA/WPA2 and WEP wireless security.

Time Capsule will be available next month for MSRPs of $299 and $499 for the 500GB and 1TB versions.

Drobo gets networking add-on

Data Robotics today announced the launch of DroboShare, a companion product for its Drobo "storage robot" that enables users to share files over a Local Area Network.

DroboShareDroboShare allows clients to access its shares on Windows, Apple or Linux networks and supports NTFS, HFS+, EXT3, FAT32 file systems.

The Drobo device can still be disconnected from DroboShare and then connected directly to a host computer.

Other features include gigabit Ethernet support, auto mounting on Windows and Mac OS X and support for up to 8 TB of storage. DroboShare is available immediately for $199 MSRP.

HP intros new MediaVault NASes

HP isn't putting all its media serving eggs in the Windows Home Server basket and has turned back to Linux for a refresh of its dual-drive MediaVault line.

There are three new products, all built on the same shortened version of the four-drive MediaSmart server chassis, but powered by a Marvell NAS processor with 128 MB of RAM instead of the AMD CPU used on the MediaSmart server.

HP to intro Linux version of MediaSmart Server

Somehow the folks at Gizmodo got wind of a new, dual-drive version of HP's MediaSmart server. We're guessing that it will be officially unleashed at next week's Consumer Electronics show.

Iomega buying ExcelStor Group

Iomega today announced that it has entered into a definitive share purchase agreement to acquire ExcelStor Great Wall Technology Limited, a Cayman Islands company, and Shenzhen ExcelStor Technology Limited, a PRC company.

Iomega will issue approximately 84 million shares of common stock in Iomega in exchange for all outstanding ExcelStor common shares. Upon closing the transaction, GWT and its affiliates will hold approximately 43% of Iomega’s common stock, making GWT the largest Iomega shareholder. The Boards of Directors of both Iomega and ExcelStor have unanimously approved the share purchase agreement.

Thecus adds low-cost dual-drive BYOD NAS

Thecus has announced a low-cost version of its N2100 two-drive SATA NAS. The N299 is based on a StorLink SL3516 32-bit SoC Processor instead of the 600 MHz Intel 80219 Xscale processor used in the N2100. The product has two gigabit Ethernet ports and supports two internal SATA drives that can be configured in JBOD, RAID 0 or RAID 1. Additional external storage can be added via three USB 2.0 ports.

Features include iTunes, Photo and UPnP media servers as well as a download manager for scheduled, unattended BitTorrent, HTTP and FTP downloading.

Thecus did not provide pricing or availability.

Thecus announces three-drive RAID5 NAS

Thecus recently announced a three-drive RAID 5 BYOD NAS.

The N3200 features three SATA hard disk bays supporting a total of 3TB raw storage capacity and JBOD, RAID1 and RAID5 formats.

Iomega adds Rackmount, Desktop SMB NASes

Iomega today announced new rackmount and desktop NASes targeted at small and mid-sized businesses.

The StorCenter Pro NAS 200r 1TB Server and the StorCenter Pro NAS 200r 1TB Server with Print Serving capability are four-drive "data center" products powered by Windows Storage Server 2003 R2. The NASes support Microsoft’s Encrypting File System, Volume Shadow Copy Services, and Active Directory Services. The Print Serving version can support up to five printers, or more with an optional Windows Print Server upgrade.

Also introduced is the desktop StorCenter Pro NAS 150d 3TB Server with Active Directory support. This Linux-based NAS supports computers running the Windows, Unix, Linux and Mac OS X operating systems and includes a USB print server.

QNAP adds PS3, Xbox360 Media Streaming to NAS duo

QNAP Systems today announced the release of firmware for its TS-109 and TS-209 NASes that supports DLNA media streaming to Sony's PS3 and Microsoft's Xbox360.

All multimedia contents stored on the QNAP NASes can now be automatically shared to a PS3 or an Xbox360 in the home network. Users can play their stored photos and videos on a TV, or listen to the music via their Hi-Fi system.

The new firmware build upgrades the TwonkyMedia server to version 4.4 to enhance the interoperability with PS3 and Xbox360. The free firmware upgrade is available for download now.
