It's important to know when something goes wrong with your NAS. When problems occur, the ix2 can send email to a specified user. Figure 9 shows the Email Notification page where your info can be entered.

Note that by default, all you have to enter is an email address. No SMTP server needs to be specified, which is unique among the NAS devices I've worked with. (Ed. note: The Maxtor Central Axis Business Edition also uses a vendor-provided SMTP server.)
Also note the "Test" button that allows you to verify that the email alert works. I often have problems with NASes being able to successfully send me email. But in this case, it worked fine even without entering any SMTP server info. If you have issues with this method, there's an option for entering info for a SMTP server, login credentials, etc.
For web-based problem reporting, there's also a Log as seen in Figure 10. Note that you can also download the log for preservation purposes.

Figure 11 shows the Settings menu where assorted configuration items such as print serving, UPS support, language setting, etc. can be viewed or changed.

The Network Services menu (Figure 12) lets you set up your network and add support for NFS, FTP, CIFS, etc.

Previously, Iomega had support for the Apple AFP protocol, but this has been dropped. Apple users can make use of either CIFS or NFS to get the same basic functionality.
The External Storage menu is where disks plugged into a USB port are managed. I couldn't find documentation of supported formats, but a FAT32 disk worked fine, and it has been reported that NTFS disks are supported in read/write mode, which is uncommon for many NASes.
The ix2 has the ability to add user groups (Figure 13). So if you're planning on creating a lot of users with different needs, this will let you give different sets of users different privileges.

The ix2 can also join a Microsoft Active Directory Domain for user and group management (Figure 14).
